White Lake Community Library hosts book signing

WHITE LAKE -- Author Dr. Arley K. Fadness, Custer, will be at the White Lake Community Library from 4:30 to 6:30 p.m. on Sept. 3 for a book signing.

The book is "Balloons Aloft: Flying South Dakota Skies" and covers the art, science and history of ballooning in South Dakota skies since 1934.

Two of the 18 chapters feature the Explorer I and Stratosphere Balloon Explorer II launches from the Stratobowl near Rapid City in the 1930s. Several eyewitnesses of the landing of the Explorer II near White Lake are cited.

There will be program at 4:30 p.m., where Fadness will discuss various balloon flights and aeronauts that make South Dakota unique.

The price of the book is $15.99 plus tax.

Another book by Fadness, "Six Spiritual Needs in America Today," will also be available.

Fadness is a draftsman, Model A Ford restorer, pastor and writer. At one point in his drafting career, he worked with Ed Yost, of Tea, drafting Yost's 1,000-cubic-meter helium gas balloon systems. Yost is know as the inventor and father of the modern hot air balloon.

As a pastor, Fadness served in parishes in Volin, Parkston, Harrisburg, Volga, Rapid City, Spearfish and Sioux Falls while serving in South Dakota.
