Werner George Fredrick Drefs

Parkston Werner George Fredrick Drefs, 85, died Wednesday, January 8 at Avera Bormann Manor in Parkston. Funeral service will be Saturday, January 11 at 10:00 am at St. Peter Lutheran Church, rural Armour. Visitation will be Friday, January 11 from 6 to 8 pm at Koehn Bros. Funeral Home in Parkston.

Werner George Fredrick Drefs was born September 21, 1928 to John and Bertha (Fink) Drefs on the family farm in Douglas County. He attended Lincoln 30 country school and high school until he was needed on the farm. He entered the United States Army in 1951 and served during the Korean Conflict until his honorable discharge in 1953 at which time he moved back to the farm. He was united in marriage to Eileen Hafner on November 14, 1954 at Zion Lutheran Church in Mitchell, SD. They farmed on the home place until retiring into Parkston, SD in 1997. Werner was a lifelong member of St. Peter Lutheran Church where he served as an elder and Sunday School Superintendent. He loved hunting, fishing, baseball, trapshooting and polka music. He enjoyed playing both of his accordions and visiting with family and friends. Werner went to his heavenly home on Wednesday, January 8, 2014 at Avera Bormann Manor in Parkston at the age of 85.

He is survived by his wife of 59 years, Eileen of Parkston; a son, Michael Drefs of Delmont, SD; 2 daughters: Diane Drefs of Sioux Falls, SD and Carol (Dale) Stephenson of Sioux Falls; 7 grandchildren: Christopher (Teri) Kayl of Worthing, Lori (Corey) Cowins of Mitchell, Victoria Drefs of Porcia, Italy, Matthew (Katie) Drefs of McAllen, TX, Jonathan (Clarissia) Drefs of Sioux Falls, Karli Stephenson of Sioux Falls and Paige Stephenson of Sioux Falls; 9 great-grandchildren; 2 sisters: Anna (Bob) Graumann and Melinda (Rodney) Hinrichs; a brother, Rueben (Darlene) Drefs; and numerous nieces, nephews, cousins and friends.

He was preceded in death by his parents; a sister, Ruth and a brother-in-law, Ervin Matzner.
