Carpenter wins pole vault at Pierre Legion Relays

PIERRE — Mitchell’s Mason Carpenter took top marks in the boys pole vault Friday at the Pierre American Legion Relays.

Carpenter vaulted 12 feet, 6 inches to beat Spearfish’s Trevor Sigmond and Brandon Valley’s Cole Christensen. Carpenter was the only Mitchell athlete to win an individual event.

Ellie Rew finished in second in the girls 100-meter hurdles with a time of 15.13 seconds. Tevyn Waddell also took second in the girls high jump with a jump of 5-0 and Josie Dierks finished third in the triple jump with a leap of 33-8.

Mitchell finished tenth in the boys standings and seventh in the girls standings. Lyman and Winner also participated in the relays. Winner finished first in the boys 1,600-meter sprint medley with a time of 3:43.01 and finished ninth in the boys results. 

Bon Homme baseball team splits with Dakota Valley

TABOR — The Bon Homme baseball team split a doubleheader with Dakota Valley Thursday, 9-6, 3-2.

Dakota Valley pounded out eight hits to win the first game. Austin Kaul got the loss for Bon Homme in the opening game. Chase Kortan had two hits and three RBIs in the first game. Kortan earned the win on the mound in the second game, striking out nine and allowing two runs in four innings. Hunter Young came in to earn the save. Young also went 3-for-4.

Bon Homme (7-3) plays Vermillion Wednesday in Vermillion.

Cassidy Hanson signs with Mount Marty volleyball

Winner’s Cassidy Hanson has signed to play volleyball at Mount Marty College in the fall.

Hanson helped lead the Warriors to a runner-up finish at the Class A state volleyball tournament in 2013. The 6-foot outside hitter recorded 306 kills and 432 digs as a senior and was named second-team all-state in volleyball.
