DWU linebacker Bonte nominated for national award

Dakota Wesleyan University sophomore linebacker Brady Bonte is one of 100 nominees for the inaugural Cliff Harris Award.


The award will be presented annually to the top small college defensive player of the year in the country. Almost 500 college and universities at the NAIA and NCAA Division II and III levels are represented.

Bonte was one of eight underclassmen nominated and one of two underclassmen from the NAIA.

He led the Tiger defense with 88 tackles, averaging 8.1 tackles per game. He was eighth in the NAIA in both tackles for a loss (20) and sacks (9).

Finalists for the award will be announced Dec. 4 and the winner will be announced Dec. 24.

DWU women’s soccer team earns academic award

The Dakota Wesleyan University women’s soccer team earned an academic award this week.

The Tigers were one of 593 teams from around the country to earn the National Soccer Coaches Association of America’s Team Academic Award for the 2012-13.

DWU’s team GPA was 3.28. This marks the fourth time the Tigers have been honored by the NSCAA.

Bormann named junior female golfer of year by SDGA

Sydney Bormann, of Parkston, has been named the junior female golfer of the year for 2013 by the South Dakota Golf Association.

Bormann finished second in the Junior Girls Championship and the Women’s Match Play Championship. She teamed up with Tommy Vining to finish second in the Mixed Team Championship, won the Big I/College Preview Championship and won the inaugural Midwest Junior Championship in Des Moines, Iowa.

She also tied for third in the Class A state golf tournament last year.

USD men’s program signs Huron senior center Decker

University of South Dakota interim head men’s basketball coach Joey James has signed Huron native Justin Decker, it was announced Friday.

Decker, a 6-foot-6 senior center, was a second-team all-state selection as a junior, averaging 15 points and six rebounds per game. He was also a member of the Class AA all-state tournament team.

Ticket prices stay the same for Tiger DH at Pentagon

Ticket prices for the Dakota Wesleyan University men’s and women’s basketball games against Nebraska Wesleyan University today at the Sanford Pentagon in Sioux Falls will be the same as a normal home game.

Tickets are $6 for adults and $3 for students. All DWU and TeamMakers passes and punch cards, as well as DWU IDs, will be accepted at the door.

The women’s game begins at noon with the men’s contest following at 2 p.m.

DWU wrestling team falls to Northern State in dual

ABERDEEN — The Dakota Wesleyan University wrestling team fell to Northern State University 26-18 in a dual Thursday.

The Tigers got wins from Richard Rios (133), Ryan Roach (157), Trever DeVestern (165), Tyler Sarringar (197) and Jade Hoisington (285).

DeVestern was the only DWU wrestler to win by pin.

DWU is back in action today at the Augsburg Open in Minneapolis.
