Pierre hosts state Special Olympics hoops tourney

PIERRE (AP) — About 1,200 people including 800 athletes are expected in Pierre this weekend for the Special Olympics South Dakota 2014 State Basketball Tournament.

The Friday-Saturday event is taking place in eight gyms at four sites in Pierre and neighboring Fort Pierre. Sixty teams are competing.

Spokesman Chuck Quinn tells the Capital Journal that it’s the first time the tournament has been held in Pierre. He says the central location is likely to boost attendance.

The games are open to the public, and there’s no charge to attend.

DWU baseball tops Olivet Nazarene 7-1

TUCSON, Ariz. — Kyle Larson picked up the win on the mound as the Dakota Wesleyan University baseball team beat Olivet Nazarene 7-1 Friday.

Ben Spitznagel went 3-for-4 with a triple and three RBIs, while Ben Ladner went 2-for-4 with two RBIs for DWU, which had 10 total hits.

Larson threw six innings, giving up one run on four hits while striking out one.

The Tigers (9-7) also played Valley City State Friday but the game was not finished at the time this edition went to press.
