Webster wrestling team breaks SD duals record
WEBSTER (AP) — The high school wrestling team in the northeastern South Dakota city of Webster has added to an already impressive resume.
The Bearcats have broken the state record for consecutive dual victories, with 60, the American News reported. The streak dates back to the 2010 season.
Sturgis had the record, with 58 straight dual wins, and still owns the Class A mark. Howard previously had the Class B record with 51.
The Webster wrestling program has seven state championships to its credit. It also has produced 23 individual state champions, including six-time champ Logan Storley and three-time champ John Schiley. The program produced Brock Lesnar, who went on become an NCAA heavyweight champion.
"It's the kids and the amount of effort and work that they put in. Talent on the mat is everything," coach Wade Rausch said. "You don't make that. You don't just snap your fingers and say, 'I've got talent.' "
Webster is finished with the dual portion of its season, so the Bearcats will open next year's season with the streak still going.
