Armour - Walter A. Spease, 86, died at Golden Living Center in Armour on Sunday, December 22, 2013. Funeral service will be Friday, December 27, 2013 at 10:00 AM at Zion Lutheran Church in Delmont with burial following in Zion Lutheran Cemetery in Delmont. Visitation will be Thursday, December 26, 2013 from 5 - 7 PM at Zion Lutheran Church in Delmont with a prayer service at 7:00 PM. Arrangements by Koehn Bros. Funeral Home.
Walter Andrew Spease was born in Douglas County, Delmont, SD on April 27, 1927, the youngest of three children, to Henry F. and Mable (Ziegler) Spease. He grew up in the Delmont area and graduated from Delmont High School in 1945. He enlisted and was sworn into the U.S. Navy in July of 1946 at the end of WWII. On June 6, 1948 he was united in marriage to Olinda Brenner at Zion Lutheran Church in Delmont. They farmed north of Delmont until 1960 when they moved into Delmont where he worked at Moorman Feed. He became the manager of Agland Coop Delmont and retired after 20 plus years of service and continued to work at Armour Lumber Co. for 26 years. Delmont Indees Baseball was his passion and he played, managed, and "kept the book" for over 60 years. Walt and Linda loved following sports and supported their children and grandchildren by attending as many events as possible. He was a member of the Delmont Baseball Association, Laib-Albrecht 249 Legion for 66 years, and Zion Lutheran Church holding various offices and singing in the choir. Walter died at Golden Living Center in Armour, SD on Sunday, December 22, 2013 at the age of 86.
Grateful for having shared his life are his wife of 65 years, Linda of Armour, SD, 2 daughters, Virginia (Larry) Gunderson of Woodbury, MN and Valrae (Tim) Schwaderer of Delmont, SD, 2 sons, Van (Dorothy) Spease of Armour, SD and Vincent (Amy) Spease of Rapid City, SD, 7 grandchildren, 6 step-grandchildren, 4 great-grandchildren, 5 step-great-grandchildren, 2 brothers-in-law, Eltor (Marilyn) Brenner of Armour, SD and Lloyd (Wyllo) Brenner of Las Vegas, NV, and 2 sisters-in-law, Loretta Rittel of Laughlin, NV and Verna (Wayne) Remme of Armour, SD.
He was preceded in death by his parents, 2 sisters, Mildred (Ben) Sandau and Mary Helen (Carl) Gunnare, in-laws, Oliver and Norma Krueger and H.I. Rittel, and step-granddaughter, Lisa McNinch.
