Wagner ends MV/P streak, takes SESD tourney
PARKSTON — The Wagner Red Raiders went 4-0 to win the Southeast South Dakota volleyball tournament Saturday in Parkston.
On their way to the tourney title, the Red Raiders (22-6) ended the 19-match winning streak of Mount Vernon/Plankinton (22-3) in the championship pool.
“Our team really stepped up,” Wagner coach Amy Tyler said. “We were quick to the ball and served aggressively.”
After straight set victories over Scotland and Gregory to get into the championship pool, Wagner faced off against host Parkston (16-11) in a back-and-forth affair that saw the Red Raiders triumph in three sets.
“Every time we play Parkston it seems that the games are decided by two or three points,” Tyler said.
Wagner beat Parkston 26-24, 25-27, 25-17, led by Gina Soukup with 14 kills.
Kim Koupal added nine kills and 16 digs in the win for Wagner, while Kayla Deurmier contributed 30 assists.
The Red Raiders next faced MV/P, which came into the match on a 19-game win streak. The Titans beat Wagner in five close sets on Oct. 14 in Wagner, but the Red Raiders made sure this time was different.
Wagner beat MV/P 25-21, 25-21 on the strength of aggressive play, according to Tyler.
Koupal led the Red Raiders with seven kills and 11 digs, while Delaynie Dickerson racked up six aces.
Deurmier ended the tournament with 81 assists for Wagner, while Koupal totaled 30 kills in the four matches.
Brooklyn Tolliver, along with Koupal and Soukup earned a spot on the SESD all-tournament team. Tolliver had 23 digs in the Wagner win over Parkston.
The Titans defeated Parkston in the other championship pool match. The set scores were 25-17, 25-22, giving MV/P second and Parkston third.
Makaela Karst, Mikayla Weiss and Dani Stoltz each earned all-tourney honors for the Titans.
Parkston’s Laura Weiss and Whitney Weber were named to the all-tournament team as well.
Platte-Geddes took fourth place in the SESD tourney with wins over Gregory and Bon Homme in placing pool play.
Josie DeGroot led the Black Panthers with 25 kills in four matches, while Madi Whalen compiled 21 assists. Whalen and DeGroot were each named to the all-tourney team.
Platte-Geddes (12-12) started the tournament with a two-set loss to MV/P and a straight-set win over Chamberlain.
Bon Homme (17-7) took fifth place, while Gregory (11-14) finished sixth after the Cavaliers defeated the Gorillas in two sets.
Teresa Webster of Gregory and Kelsey Sutera of Bon Homme were named to the all-tournament team for their performances.
Chamberlain (7-18) took seventh place with wins over Scotland (8-16) and Burke/South Central (4-19) in the placing round.
Chamberlain defeated Burke/South Central 25-15, 25-22 on the strength of seven kills from Ilaria Giuli and 10 assist from Kennedy Wagner.
Hallie Hallock provided eight kills for the Cubs in a two-set win over Scotland, which took eighth place after defeating Burke/South Central in the placing round.
Kennedy Wagner and Grace Hazen of Burke/South Central were awarded all-tournament team honors.
