Victim's name released in rural Wagner fatal shooting
WAGNER — It’s been more than a month since a man was fatally shot at a residence in rural Wagner, and the name of the victim is virtually the only public information to emerge from the investigation.
The South Dakota U.S. Attorney’s Office released the victim’s name this week to The Daily Republic. David Rodolfo Gonzalez was 56 when he was shot and killed Nov. 7.
The office has consistently declined to release any more information.
“I won’t be able to provide any information at this time on your questions regarding the case,” Ace Crawford, spokeswoman for the U.S. Attorney’s office, wrote in an email to The Daily Republic.
The FBI is also not releasing any information, according to spokesman Kyle Loven, saying it is a pending investigation. He said investigations like this one often take time to conclude.
He gave the example of a shooting in New Town, N.D., in 2012 on the Fort Berthold Indian Reservation. Three children and a woman were killed in the incident. Loven said that investigation wrapped up in November, a year after the incident occurred.
“It is DOJ (Department of Justice) policy not to speak about the investigations because they’re active,” Loven said. “We’re prohibited from speaking about it.”
He said in the New Town shooting case, many media outlets got their information from local authorities, who are not bound by DOJ rules.
The Daily Republic has contacted local authorities in Charles Mix County, but they have refused to comment on the case, stating the FBI is the investigating authority. The shooting occurred on Yankton Sioux tribal land.
