Someone wants to do some cruising by the lake.

Late Sunday evening, Mitchell dispatch sent an officer to the 2700 block of North Ohlman for a report that two 30 mph speed-limit signs had been spray-painted to say 80 mph.

The two vandalized signs are part of an investigation by the Mitchell Police Division in which a total of seven traffic signs, two mailboxes and a shed were spraypainted in a series of events that could be connected.

Sgt. Ryan Erickson, of the Mitchell Police Division, said Monday morning there was one handicapped parking sign by the Prehistoric Indian Village, two stop signs on Indian Village Road and two speed-limit signs on Indian Village road were also vandalized.

“They could be related,” Erickson said, adding he’s unsure at this point.

Erickson said they have no suspects at this time, but are investigating related vandalisms on the 1400 block of North Main Street. Erickson said a caller reported around 11:30 a.m. Monday two mailboxes and a shed were spray-painted with the same color of paint as the signs around Lake Mitchell. City of Mitchell employees replaced the vandalized signs Monday.

Traffic Specialist Dick Figland said vandalism acts happens from time to time, but not often. The city keeps a stock of replacement signs, not only for vandalism, but for regular replacement and updating, he said.

Chief of Public Safety Lyndon Overweg said anyone with information regarding the vandalisms can call the police at 995-8400 or Mitchell Area Crime Stoppers at 996-1700.
