USD holds on to defeat UC Davis 10-7

VERMILLION — Quarterback Josh Vander Maten rushed for a 3-yard touchdown in the second quarter and South Dakota held on to defeat UC Davis 10-7 Saturday in the season opener for both teams.

Vander Maten's touchdown capped a 10-play, 77-yard drive by the Coyotes. His score was set up by a 21-yard run by Terrance Terry.

Vander Maten finished 9 of 17 for 91 yards and had 35 yards rushing.

Down 10-0 after Miles Bergner's 39-yard fourth-quarter field goal, UC Davis drove 75 yards for the Aggies' only score. Gabe Manzanares carried the ball six times during the nine-play drive, scoring from 1-yard out with 3:41 to play.

The Coyotes won their 12th consecutive home opener, spoiling Ron Gould's debut as UC Davis' head coach.

South Dakota State 55, Butler 14

BROOKINGS — Austin Sumner threw three touchdown passes and South Dakota State totaled more than 500 yards of offense in a 55-14 win against Butler on Saturday night in the season opener for both teams.

Jackrabbits offensive stars Sumner and Zach Zenner each had a big game. Sumner, who completed 32 passes for 332 yards, has a good chance to become South Dakota State's all-time leading passer this season. Zenner, who carried the ball 16 times for 177 yards and two TDs, returns after leading the nation in rushing last season.

Sumner's first touchdown pass broke a 7-7 tie and the Jackrabbits rattled off 34 unanswered points to put the game out of reach.

The Jackrabbits amassed 546 yards of total offense compared with Butler's 272.

Butler's Matt Lancaster passed for 140 yards and threw three interceptions. He was also the Bulldogs' leading rusher, with 6 carries for 63 yards.

Peru State 56, Dakota State 21

AUBURN, Neb. -- Dakota State University fell 56-21 in its season opener to Peru State Saturday.

Peru State had 310 rushing yards in the win and were led by quarterback Tyler Audsley with 14 carries for 148 yards and three touchdowns. Audsley was 6-for-9 in passing for 60 yards and one touchdown.

The Trojans had 92 rushing yards and 199 total offensive yards in the game. DSU had two scores from fumble recoveries.

The Trojans (0-1) host Dordt at 6 p.m. Saturday in Madison.

SD Mines and Technology 65, Cole College 6

RAPID CITY -- The South Dakota School of Mines and Technology football team defeated Cole College 65-6 in its home opener Saturday.

The Hardrockers scored 28 points in the first quarter and had 489 total offensive yards to Cole's 209.

Quarterback Evan Sanders finished with 142 yards, completing 12 for 19 passes and threw two touchdowns

SD Mines (1-0) plays Colorado School of Mines at noon Saturday in Golden, Colo.
