An 18-year-old man was found dead Wednesday in a Mitchell apartment.

Though the name of the man was not released by police, The Daily Republic, acting on a tip, confirmed with a Mitchell Technical Institute official that the man was Paul Jackson, an MTI student and graduate of Brandon Valley High School. Jackson was a student in MTI's power line construction and maintenance program.

Around 12:12 p.m., emergency personnel were dispatched to 2221 N. Kimball St., Apt. 3. The deceased man's roommate reported the death, said Detective Lt. Don Everson.

Police released few details.

"There is no obvious cause of death," said a written police statement.

The visible emergency response to the apartment sparked calls from the public, which is why police released some limited information, Everson said.

An autopsy will be conducted at the Minnehaha County Coroner's Office in Sioux Falls.

Everson said the police notified the man's immediate family.

"We want to give the immediate family time to notify other extended family members before we release more information," Everson said. "We don't want them to read about it on the Internet."

MTI President Greg Von Wald, who was interviewed earlier Wednesday by The Daily Republic, separate from another MTI official who later confirmed Jackson's identity, extended his condolences the family.

"Any time that one of our students dies, especially an 18-year-old, it's a tragedy -- not just for his family, but for his buddies and extended family at MTI," Von Wald said.
