Mitchell United Way's annual fundraiser kickoff will send 192 volunteers into the community today -- a record number.

During the fifth annual Day of Caring, volunteers wearing special shirts will paint and clean houses, paint fire hydrants, do landscaping and clean up some areas throughout town, among other projects. Last year, 180 people volunteered.

Dave Stevens, executive director of Mitchell United Way, said more of the agencies it assists are helping out this year.

Last year was the first year an agency, LifeQuest, volunteered. This year, several others are following suit.

"They are not volunteering in their own locations, but going out into the community," he said.

The Day of Caring typically focuses on helping with projects at agencies the United Way supports. However, so few of them submit or suggest projects, Stevens said, that the United Way has gone to more civic projects.

This will be the second year volunteers will spruce up faded fire hydrants with bright red paint. This will be the first year volunteers will pick up trash along several sections of road -- including the Highway 37 Bypass and Burr Street from First Avenue to Spruce Street.

This year's United Way fundraising goal is $440,000 -- up from last year's goal of $425,000, which was exceeded.

Typically, to determine the fundraising goal, Stevens said the board of directors considers all requests for funding and decides how much to allocate to each agency. The final total is the United Way's goal.

Volunteers will be working on 30 projects today, all taking place in Mitchell.

"That's a lot of projects," Stevens said. "I'm more than pleased that we have more businesses and agencies that have signed up to make our community better. That's our theme, making life better."
