Tyndall teeners shut out the competition, win state title

The Tyndall teener baseball team did not allow a run through three games and took the State A VFW baseball tournament with a 6-0 victory over Dell Rapids Sunday in Volga.

It was the sixth straight title for the same core group of players from Tyndall, which has won two U12 titles, two 13-14 VFW championships and now two straight at the 15-16 VFW level.

"We expect to win, but shutting out three opponents was a little more than I expected," Tyndall coach Gary Kortan said. "We try to get our pitchers to throw strikes, we played good defense behind them and it all worked out."

Tyndall finished the season on an eight-game winning streak, with an overall record of 12-5.

In the championship game against Dell Rapids, Chase Kortan threw a complete game, allowing four hits and striking out 11 over seven innings. Kortan added four hits, including two doubles and two RBIs in the win. Hunter Young chipped in with two doubles and Zach Sutera finished with a double.

Young threw a no-hitter against the host team Volga on Saturday to get Tyndall into the championship. Tyndall beat Volga 9-0, as Young struck out 12 batters over seven innings.

"For the most part, Hunter struggled this year after not getting a lot of innings," Gary Kortan said. "He sure stepped up and he was really bringing it."

From the leadoff spot, Brendan Bares finished with two hits, including a home run and three runs scored. Young added two doubles, while Chase Kortan and Cole Uecker each finished with a double and a single.

"Up and down the lineup we have always been strong and we pride ourselves on being a tough out no matter where we are in the order," Gary Kortan said.
