At this time two years ago, high temperature records were set in Mitchell when the thermometer reached 58 degrees on Jan. 4, 2012, and 68 degrees on Jan. 5, 2012.
The temperature could dip to around 80 degrees lower than that this weekend.
The National Weather Service forecasts a high of 13 degrees today in Mitchell, along with blowing snow caused by 15 to 20 mph winds, with gusts as high as 30 mph.
The high is forecast at 4 degrees below zero on Sunday, with scattered snow showers before noon.
Increasingly strong winds during the day, with gusts as high as 35 mph, are expected to cause the wind chill to drop to 23 below zero.
The coldest temperatures are expected Sunday night, with a low of 19 below zero, and on Monday, with a high of 11 below zero.
With winds between 15 and 25 mph, the wind chill Monday is expected to fall as low as 47 degrees below zero.
By Tuesday, the cold is expected to loosen its grip on the region, but only slightly, as the high is forecast at 3 degrees with wind chills as low as 23 below zero.
