Two injured in single-vehicle crash

A single-vehicle accident Wednesday southeast of Mitchell sent two people to the hospital with serious but non-life-threatening injuries.

The accident occurred at 1 a.m. on a snow-covered part of 255th Street, three-tenths of a mile west of the intersection with Bartscher Road, according to the Davison County Sheriff's Office.

Fred Shank, 53, of Mitchell, was driving a 1993 Chevrolet Astro van heading east when his vehicle's rear passenger-side tire slid off the road while going around a curve.The van went into the ditch, where it made contact with a tree on the passenger-side front of the vehicle. Neither Shank nor his 27-year-old female passenger was wearing a seat belt at the time of the accident and both were transported to Avera Queen of Peace Hospital with serious injuries.

The Mitchell Police Division and Mitchell Ambulance also responded to the accident, which remains under investigation.
