ALEXANDRIA -- Two people suffered minor injuries in a one-vehicle accident Sunday afternoon near Alexandria.

A driver and passenger in a 2011 Cadillac STS rolled on a curve near Lake Hanson in Hanson County, according to the Highway Patrol. Trooper Matthew Petersen said Thomas Totton, 28, of Mitchell, was intoxicated on alcohol as he drove east along North Shore Drive and took a 30-mph curve at about 45 mph. The vehicle drifted off the roadway, Totton over-corrected, missed a mailbox by a half-inch, slid across the roadway and rolled into the ditch.

The vehicle ended up facing west. The car is totaled, Petersen said.

Rescue workers had to pry the passenger door open with a tool to extract Terysha Roth, 19, of Hurley. Both occupants suffered only minor injuries and were transported by Mitchell Ambulance to Avera Queen of Peace Hospital in Mitchell for treatment.

Totton will be cited for drunken driving, careless driving and not wearing his seatbelt. Hanson County Ambulance, Alexandria Fire Department, Hanson County Sheriff's Office and Mitchell Ambulance also responded.
