Two former Kernels to be inducted into SD wrestling HOF
Former Kernel wrestlers Tyler Jones and Adam Feldman will be inducted into the South Dakota High School Wrestling Coaches Association Hall of Fame this weekend.
They are two of 11 people who will be inducted at the Class A state wrestling tournament Saturday in Rapid City. Larry Holland, Travis Slaba and George Grubbs are three other area inductees and will be honored Saturday at the Class B state wrestling tournament in Aberdeen.
Jones was a five-time state placer with two state titles for the Kernels from 1994 to 98. His two state championships came in 1997 at 140 pounds and 1998 at 171 pounds. Jones, who had a record of 159-14, helped the Kernels to four straight state team titles from 1995 through 1998 under coach Andy Tate.
Jones continued wrestling after high school at South Dakota State University, where he was a four-time All-American, two-time NCAA finalist and two-time North Central Conference Champion. He finished his college career with a 102-17 record.
Feldman was a two-time state champion and two-time runner-up with a career record of 142-7 for Mitchell. In 1992, he took second at the National High School Senior Nationals. In addition, Feldman was a two-time All-American and was a Division II national champion for SDSU.
Holland was an assistant at Howard for 33 years, beginning in 1978. During that time, the Tigers won more than 400 dual matches. Holland has organized and run many youth tournaments and has volunteered at the state AAU tournament for 30-plus years.
Slaba was a four-time state champion for the Wagner Red Raiders, recording a high school record of 176-20-1. He went on to wrestle for the Nebraska Cornhuskers, where he was 21-7 and earned UNL Cornhusker red shirt of the year.
Grubbs was a three-time state champion in 1972, 1972 and 1975, for Gregory. He finished the 1975 season with a 28-0 record and had a career record of 103-5-2. Grubbs went on to wrestle for three years at Iowa State University and helped the Cyclones to a national championship in 1977.
