The trooper said there was one additional person involved in the accident, a child. A sheriff's deputy at the scene said the child was a 3-year-old girl who was transported to a hospital.

At the scene shortly after the accident was reported, a pickup was on fire and a van appeared to have already burned.

Traffic was being diverted from the scene, but smoke could be seen by motorists approaching the crash site from several miles away. The accident happened sometime between 4 and 4:30 p.m.

Eyewitnesses said a young man who came upon the accident used a knife to cut a seat belt and remove the 3-year-old survivor from one of the burning vehicles.
