Tom Young confirmed as Ethan's new girls basketball coach
ETHAN -- Former Mitchell Christian and Mitchell High School boys basketball coach Tom Young has been hired as the new girls basketball coach at Ethan High School.
The hiring was confirmed Friday by Ethan boys basketball coach Bryce Roth, who did not know when the hiring took place. Young and Ethan Athletic Director Tim Hawkins were not available for comment despite attempts to reach them by phone.
Young spent 17 years coaching the Mitchell Christian boys basketball team before taking over the Kernel program for one season in 2012-13. In an interview with The Daily Republic in April 2013, Young cited health concerns and wanting to spend more time with his family as reasons for resigning from the Mitchell job. He added, at that time, he was likely done coaching for good.
"Knowing that I'm at the point in my life that I may never coach again ... I'm OK with that," Young said in 2013.
He holds a 332-109 record as a high school coach and also spent some time coaching at Hanson High School. He won a Class B state championship with Mitchell Christian in 2003.
Young replaces Scott Giblin as the coach of a Rustler team that went 17-5 and fell in double overtime to Hanson in the District 8B final in 2013-14. Ethan was 33-9 overall in two seasons under Giblin, who was unable to be reached for comment.
The Rustlers return a strong group for the 2014-15 season, including Class B all-state second-team forward Darbi Gustafson, who is going into her senior season.
