Augustana women make NCAA Division II Elite 8

SIOUX FALLS -- The Augustana College women's basketball team has earned a trip to the NCAA Division II Elite Eight.

The Vikings beat Emporia State 75-74 on Monday to win the Central Region championship and advance to the program's first Elite Eight.

Augustana travels to San Antonio to face Clayton State in next Tuesday's quarterfinals.

USD women's basketball team playing in WBI

VERMILLION -- The University of South Dakota women's basketball team didn't make it into the NCAA tournament, but the Coyotes are still getting some postseason action.

USD (17-15) is playing at Utah State (18-13) on Thursday in the first round of the Women's Basketball Invitational Tournament.

The Coyotes also played in the WBI in 2011. Last season they made it to the Women's National Invitation Tournament.

USD lost to rival South Dakota State in the championship game of the Summit League Tournament last week. SDSU advanced to the NCAA tournament for the fifth straight season.

DWU baseball program adds 4

The Dakota Wesleyan University baseball program signed four players to its 2014 roster, it was announced Tuesday.

The four players include, Steve Sommerville, of Ajax, Ontario, Canada, Patrick Whetham, of Garretson, Austin Carroll, of Riverton, Utah, and Sean Riley, of Driggs, Idaho.

The list rounds out the recruiting class at 10.

Sommerville previously signed with Lander University after graduating high school in 2012 but decided to come to DWU next season.

This year, the Tigers are 10-10 and play Dakota State University Thursday in Madison.
