SDSU men picked 3rd in preseason conference poll
The South Dakota State University men’s basketball team was picked to finish third this season in the Summit League preseason poll, which was announced Wednesday.
The Jackrabbits have won the conference tournament the past two years to reach the NCAA tournament.
North Dakota State University was picked atop the poll, receiving 25 of 28 first-place votes. The Bison return all five starters from last year’s team.
Gregory sneaks past Colome in 5
COLOME — Courtney Opbroek had 21 kills to help the Gregory Gorillas beat the Colome Cowgirls Tuesday in five sets.
Set scores were 25-11, 22-25, 19-25, 25-19, 15-8.
Briana Leber added 12 kills and 10 digs, while Codi Horst had 31 digs. Mackenzie Odenbach had three aces for the Gorillas as well.
Colome was led by Mariah Kinzer, who finished with two aces, nine kills and one block. Callie Heath chipped in with five kills and Rebecca Moorhead had four. Moorhead also had 14 digs, while Rylee Jo Rutten had 18 digs.
Gregory (9-10) plays Burke/South Central today in Gregory, while Colome (2-14) plays White River today in White River.
Kraft takes first at Region 4B
GETTYSBURG — Wessington Springs runner Jase Kraft finished first in the boys’ five-kilometer race at the Region 4B championships Wednesday.
Kraft ran a time of 17 minutes, 15 seconds beating his closest competitor by more than one minute.
Lyman’s Leon Whitney finished fourth with a time of 18:46 and Woonsocket’s Rex Schlicht finished sixth, after running a 18:52.
Sully Buttes won the boys’ team title.
Ipswich’s Macy Heinz took first in the girls 4K race with a time of 14:32. The Ipswich girls also won the Region 4B team title.
Haggerty claims Region 3B title
FREEMAN — Freeman Academy’s Ryan Haggerty took first place in the boys’ five-kilometer race Wednesday at the Region 3B cross country championships.
Haggerty finished with a time of 18 minutes and 2.99 seconds. Burke/South Central’s Tyson Vogt came in second with a time of 18:10.79, while Cole Hofer of Freeman Academy finished third with a time of 18:17.77.
With help from Haggerty and Hofer, the Freeman Academy boys took the team title. Burke/South Central finished first among the teams on the girls’ side. BSC had five runners in the top 10.
Gayville-Volin’s Laura Nelson claimed the individual title of the girls’ 4K with a time of 14:55.88.
Hanson girls win at Region 2B
HOWARD — With help from Emily Hanson, Ellie Tuschen, Abby Hanson and Brooke Slaba, the Hanson girls cross country team captured the Region 2B title Wednesday.
All four runners finished in the top 10 of the girls’ four-kilometer race. Emily Hanson finished fifth with a time of 16 minutes and 45.21 seconds. Ellie Tuschen finished sixth with a time of 16:46.11, Abby Hanson took home seventh after running 16:46.67 and Slaba finished eighth with a time of 16:48.36.
Janae Sampson of Arlington won the girls’ individual race with a 15:33.39. Elkton-Lake Benton’s Quinn Fargen took first place in the boys’ individual race with a time of 17:03.06. Elkton-Lake Benton also claimed the boys’ team title.
