Tiger softball sets record for wins
The Dakota Wesleyan University softball team completed its regular season with a sweep of Great Plains Athletic Conference foe Hastings College Friday at McWhirter Field in Mitchell.
The Tigers improve to a 19-15 overall record and a 10-8 mark in the conference.
The Game One 2-1 win came off the bat of Hailey Unger, who hit a walk-off homerun in the bottom of the eighth. The victory broke the team’s previous record of 17 wins in a season set in 2007 and 2012. Unger was 4-for-4 in the game with both DWU RBIs.
“I don’t think a lot of people expected Hailey to do that, though I was wishing for it,” DWU coach Ed Kieff said. “These were team wins tonight.”
The Tigers scored three runs in the bottom of the fifth in the second game and held on for the 3-2 win. Katie Anderus was 3-for-4, while Vanessa Mendez picked up two RBIs.
DWU plays next agains Concordia University at noon today in Seward, Neb. The Tigers are fifth in the conference standings.
