Owls get state amateur berth

PLANKINTON -- The Wessington Springs Owls earned a come-from-behind victory Tuesday to earn a spot in the state amateur baseball tournament.

The Owls defeated Four Corners 10-9 after scoring three runs in the bottom of the ninth. Kody Kopfmann hit a two-RBI single in the ninth for Wessington Springs, which outhit Four Corners 18-14 in the game.

Adam Kaus led the Owls offensively with four hits, Armondo Rodriguez added three hits and Logan Kopfmann, Arin Boschee and Nathan Hainy each had two hits. Kody Kopfmann had three hits and three-RBIs.

For Four Corners, Kris Dozark had three hits and three RBIs and Andrew McCloud had three hits. Mendal Miller and Chad Babcock had two hits apiece in the loss.

Wessington Springs joins Chamberlain, Plankinton and Miller to represent District 3 at the state tournament, which begins Aug. 7 in Sioux Falls.

Groton wins B Legion title

WEBSTER -- Groton defeated Vermillion in a winner-take-all title game Tuesday to win the State B Legion Tournament.

Groton edged Vermillion 9-8, scoring one run in the bottom of the ninth. Vermillion, which played through the loser's bracket, beat Groton 5-3 in the first game, forcing one final game between the teams.

Feiner gets first hole-in-one

Leona Feiner, of Mitchell, recorded her first hole-in-one Wednesday at Lakeview Golf Course in Mitchell.

The ace was on hole No. 12, which is 146 yards, and Feiner used her driver.

Alexandria, MV/P record wins at tourney

SALEM -- Alexandria recorded 10 hits en route to defeating Scotland 13-0 Wednesday during the Region 2B teener tournament.

Jerrod Zens had a triple and a single for Alexandria, while Josh Feiner had three hits and Aaron Wenande had two. Feiner was also the winning pitcher, allowing two hits and striking out one in four innings. Tucker Kingsbury pitched two innings of scoreless relief for Alexandria.

Blake Konstanz was the losing pitcher for Scotland, striking out nine in four innings. Tanner Iwan and Tanner Skorepa each had doubles in the loss.

Alexandria plays Mount Vernon/Plankinton at 6 p.m. today in Salem.

MOUNT VERNON/PLANKINTON 18, EMERY 3

SALEM -- Max Moore threw four innings, allowing three runs on two hits and striking out three to help Mount Vernon/Plankinton defeat Emery.

MV/P recorded eight hits and was led by Ty Harris, who had two singles. Peyton Bailey was handed the loss for Emery.

The game ended in the fourth inning due to the 15-run rule.
