Three Mitchell powerlifters win at SF Bench Open
The meet was a bench press only meet. Abe Weins won the men’s 220-pound raw class with a best lift of 402.3 pounds. Cody Jenks won the men’s 198-pound raw class with a best lift of 314.1 pounds and Andrew Priebe won the men’s open 165-pound class with a best lift of 347.2 pounds.
All three lifters set state records in their respective classes.
Wesleyan’s Rios named GPAC wrestler of week
By The Daily RepublicDakota Wesleyan University’s Richard Rios was named the Great Plains Athletic Conference wrestler of the week, it was announced Tuesday.Rios, who was ranked No. 1 at 133 pounds in Monday’s NAIA North Group Individual rankings, is 12-3 on the season. He went 6-0 last week, winning both matches in a tri-match with Northwestern College and Augustana College.Rios also went 4-0 at the Buena Vista Open to take the 133-pound title and all four of the wrestlers he beat finished in the top four.The Tigers were ranked 15th in this week’s NAIA wrestling coaches’ top 20 poll.
Hanson defeats Ethan 52-47 in season openerBy The Daily RepublicALEXANDRIA — Sydney Dodd had 11 points and five assists to help the Hanson girls’ basketball team beat Ethan 52-47 Tuesday.Katlyn Schroeder added a team-high 13 points and Kynedi Cheeseman scored 14 points for the Beavers, who shot 21-for-39 from the field and had 29 rebounds and 22 turnovers.Ethan was led by Kacey Bartscher and Darbi Gustafson with 14 points apiece. Gustafson added eight rebounds for Ethan, which shot 16-for-42 from the field and had 30 rebounds and 14 turnovers.Hanson (1-0) won the JV game and plays Bridgewater-Emery today in Bridgewater, while Ethan (0-1) hosts Mount Vernon/Plankinton Monday.
Bridgewater-Emery edged in first gameBy The Daily RepublicIRENE — The Bridgewater-Emery girls’ basketball team fell 47-46 in its first game of the season to Irene-Wakonda Tuesday.Tiana Kayser led the way with 16 points and five rebounds in the loss. Justine Dye and Kadra Kayser added 12 points apiece with Kayser adding five rebounds.Irene-Wakonda’s top scorer was Makayla Mohr with 11 points.The Huskies (0-1) play Hanson today in Bridgewater.
DWU wrestling beats Jamestown in DualBy The Daily RepublicJAMESTOWN, N.D. — The Dakota Wesleyan wrestling team defeated the University Of Jamestown (N.D.) 40-9 in a dual Wednesday.DWU got wins in every weight class but two. The Tigers highlight wins of the evening came from 174-pound Jarrick Jensen, 197-pound Shea Klooster, 285-pound Eric Gruis and 165-pound Trever DeVestern, who each earned victories via pin.
SDSU women defeat No. 12 Penn StateBy The Daily RepublicBROOKINGS — The South Dakota State women’s basketball team improved to 7-4 with an 83-79 win over No. 12 Penn State Wednesday.The Jackrabbits knocked down nine of its 25 3-point field goals en route to shooting 37 percent from the field.Leading the way for SDSU was Megan Waytashek and Stephanie Paluch. Waytashek tallied 18 points and eight rebounds, while Paluch had 18 points, two rebounds and two assists.Mitchell native and freshman guard Kerri Young chipped in with six points and one assist.Ariel Edwards and Maggie Lucas led Penn State. Edwards finished with 24 points and seven rebounds while Lucas had 20 points.The Jackrabbits play host to Central Michigan Sunday at 1 p.m. at Frost Arena.
