Benter, Cooney win MVP Invite

Burke/South Central’s Sydney Benter and Andes Central’s J.J. Cooney each took home individual titles at the Mount Vernon/Plankinton Golf Invite Wednesday at Lakeview Golf Course in Mitchell.

Benter shot an 80 to claim the girls title, while Wagner’s Megan Zephier and Platte-Geddes’ Cassidy Plooster each shot a 95 to finish second and third, respectively.

Cooney shot a 75 to claim the boys title. He bested White River’s Mat Beardt, who shot a 78 to finish second and Bon Homme’s Alec Johnson, who shot an 80 to finish third.

Bon Homme won the boys title with a score of 264, while Platte-Geddes took home the girls title with a 291.

Tuschen wins event at West Central Early Bird

HARTFORD — McCook Central/Montrose’s Anthony Tuschen won the 400-meter dash at the West Central Early Bird track meet Tuesday.

He was the only Fighting Cougar to win an individual event, clocking in at 53.3 seconds for the title. On the boys side, MCM won the 1,600-meter relay with a time of 3:43.9 and the medley relay in 3:53.6.

On the girls side, MCM’s Morgan Matthaei took third in the 400-meter dash and Danielle Hansen finished fourth in the 100-meter dash. Brianna Painter was fifth in the 300-meter hurdles.

Mitchell athletic banquet May 7 at Corn Palace

The annual Mitchell Athletic Recognition Banquet is scheduled for 6:30 p.m. May 7 at the Corn Palace in Mitchell.

The banquet will honor student athletes’ achievements from the past year. Tickets are $10 and can be purchased at the high school.

The hall of fame banquet is now a part of Homecoming week in the fall. The banquet is scheduled for Oct. 4.

Parkston’s Bormann wins Dakota Valley Golf Invitational

Parkston sophomore Sydney Bormann shot a 37 to win the Dakota Valley Golf Invitational Tuesday.

The Trojans also claimed the team title with a score of 173. Sioux Falls Christian took second with a score of 181 and West Central finished third with a score of 185. Sydney Weber shot a 43 to finish fourth for Parkston, while Sierra Stands shot a 45 to finish seventh. Jayden Bormann shot a 48 to finish 16th, while Tianna Kruse shot a 52 and finished 25th.

Fundraiser set up for former Wesleyan wrestler

Friends and family of Kyle Henderson have set up a fundraising page for the former Dakota Wesleyan University wrestler after he was injured in a car accident in late March.

Those looking to help support Henderson and his family with medical bills can visit the fundraising page at https://fundly.com/kyle-henderson-wrestling-for-life. The page has already received more than $3,000, according to DWU officials

DWU’s Court-Menendez earns GPAC honors

Dakota Wesleyan University’s Nicole Court-Menendez was named the Great Plains Athletic Conference track athlete of the week, it was announced Wednesday.

The sophomore earned the honor with her performance in the 5,000-meter race walk at the Central Methodist Invite Saturday in Fayetteville, Mo. She set a personal- best and school record in the event, while qualifying for the NAIA Outdoor National Championships.
