Wesleyan softball splits with BCU

SIOUX CITY, Iowa — The Dakota Wesleyan University softball team split a doubleheader with Briar Cliff University in Great Plains Athletic Conference action Wednesday in Sioux City, Iowa.

Pitcher Jill Dickson picked up the 6-2 win in the first game for the Tigers (9-9, 2-4 GPAC). Dickson pitched a complete game for Wesleyan, striking out six Charger hitters. The Tigers pounded out 12 hits, with Lindy

Snook going 3-for-4 with two RBIs. Mitchell native Chelsey Moody and Katie Anderus each picked up two hits in the win for DWU.

In the second game, the Tigers fell 10-6, leaving 12 runners on base.

Lorissa Loeppky came away with the loss for DWU, pitching five innings and allowing five runs on eight hits. Natalie Gutierrez and Danielle Klassen each finished with two hits and two RBIs in the loss.

DWU continues GPAC play in a doubleheader against Midland University at 1 p.m. Saturday in Fremont, Neb.

Morningside picks up commitment from Michels

Torrie Michels, a senior at Mitchell High school, has committed to play for Morningside College, where she plans to enroll in the school’s nursing program.

Michels made the decision to play for the Mustangs on March 20, shortly after the Kernels finished runner- up at the Class AA state tournament.

The 5-foot-5 guard started all 25 games for Mitchell, while averaging 4.2 points and 3.4 rebounds per game. She took home the team’s defensive player of the year and hustle awards.

DWU, pitching five innings and allowing five runs on eight hits. Natalie Gutierrez and Danielle Klassen each finished with two hits and two RBIs in the loss.

DWU continues GPAC play in a doubleheader against Midland University at 1 p.m. Saturday in Fremont, Neb.

Mitchell baseball opener canceled

The season opener for the Mitchell Kernel baseball team with Sioux Falls Washington has been canceled.

The game was originally scheduled to be played at 5:30 p.m. today Mitchell coach Luke Norden said he was not sure if the game would be rescheduled. The Kernels first game will now be against Rapid City Central Saturday in Rapid City.

Kernels’ Schmidt to run track at Augustana College

Mitchell High School senior Emma Schmidt has committed to join the Augustana women’s track and field team next year.

Schmidt, who will run sprints for the Vikings, ran a career-best 59.84 seconds in the 40-meter dash, finishing seventh at the 2013 state championships.

She recently finished her final season with the Kernel basketball team, where she started all 25 games for the Class AA state runner-up.
