Thursday's area high school volleyball roundup: MCS defeats Iroquois in straight sets

Abbie and Emily Reynen each recorded double-digit kills to help the Mitchell Christian Golden Eagles volleyball team defeat Iroquois 3-0 Thursday in Mitchell.


Set scores were 25-11, 25-22, 25-23.

Emily Reynen recorded 12 kills, while Abbie had 10. Cassidy Graham had four kills and eight digs, Ashley Schmit added four kills and one ace and Emily Schrag had 29 assists, one block and eight digs.

Iroquois was led by Kelsey Blue. Blue had 14 assists, two kills and five digs. Brittney Moeller chipped in with nine kills, one block and one dig.

Iroquois (0-2) plays Highmore-Harrold Thursday. Mitchell Christian (2-3) travels to play Wessington Springs Tuesday.

Andes Central 3, Avon 2

AVON — Payton and Dennisha Johanneson each had 16 kills to lead Andes Central over Avon in a five-set thriller Thursday.

Set scores were 19-25, 31-29, 19-25, 25-14, 15-12.

Payton Johanneson recorded 14 assists and 12 digs, while Dennisha had 20 assists, seven digs and three blocks. DiMera Dvorak added 13 assists, while JoMarie Garcia had seven aces in the win.

Chesney Nagel recorded 14 kills, four blocks, 15 digs and one ace for Avon, which won both the B and C matches. Hanna Powers recorded 27 assists, Ariana Oorlog had 10 kills, three blocks, 10 digs and six aces and Heidi Cap added 11 blocks and six kills in the loss.

Avon (0-3) plays Tripp-Delmont/Armour Tuesday in Tripp, while Andes Central (1-1) hosts Parkston Tuesday.

Canistota 3, Centerville 1

CENTERVILLE — Canistota downed Centerville in four sets Thursday night 25-15, 25-14, 20-25, 25-17.

Senior Brianna Buseman delivered nine kills for the Hawks, while Morgan Larson added 13 assists. Karly Denison led the Canistota defense with seven digs.

Centerville senior outside hitter Carleigh Oster posted 10 digs and four kills for the Tornadoes. The junior varsity match went to Centerville in two sets.

Up next for Canistota (1-1) is a home match against Marion on Tuesday.

Dakota Christian 3, Colome 0

NEW HOLLAND — Abbi BaanHofman finished with 10 kills, seven digs and four blocks to lead Dakota Christian to a win over Colome on Thursday.

The Cadets finished off the match in three sets, 25-12, 25-11, 25-19.

Junior Brooklyn Vander Pol added to the strong frontcourt play of Dakota Christian with three kills, five blocks and four digs. Senior Germaine Niewenhuis added seven assists.

For Colome, Becca Moorhead attempted to fight off the Cadet attack, racking up 19 digs and three kills.

In the junior varsity match, Colome defeated Dakota Christian in two sets.

Colome (0-2) plays at Gregory Saturday, while Dakota Christian (2-1) plays Viborg-Hurley Tuesday in Viborg.

Winner 3, Valentine, Neb. 0

WINNER — Lindsey Calhoon had eight kills and 15 digs to help the Winner Warriors beat Valentine, Neb., in three sets Thursday.

Set scores were 25-18, 25-12, 25-16.

Cassidy Hanson recorded 10 digs, six kills and one assist for Winner. Sara Husher had 23 assists, 13 digs, two aces and two kills, while Kelsey Bertram had five kills, one block, 15 digs and one ace.

Brittney O’Kief led Valentine, Neb., tallying 11 kills, six digs and one ace.

Winner 3, Ainsworth, Neb. 0

WINNER — The Winner volleyball team defeated Ainsworth, Neb., in three sets Thursday.

Set scores were 25-11, 25-9, 25-21.

Winner (4-0) was led by Cassidy Hanson. Hanson recorded nine kills and 19 digs. Lindsey Calhoon had six kills, one block and 10 digs for Winner, Kelsey Bertram had three assists, 17 digs and two aces and Sara Husher had four kills, 22 assists, nine digs and three aces.

Lydia Allen led the way for Ainsworth, Neb., recording four kills, three blocks, seven digs and three aces.

Winner hosts Bennett County Tuesday in Winner.

Parkston 3, Hanson 1

PARKSTON — Parkston defeated Hanson 20-25, 27-25, 25-17, 25-18 in a high school volleyball game Thursday in Parkston.

Whitney Weber had 55 assists, 23 kills and 18 digs to lead to the Trojans. Kenzie Lee had 13 kills and 20 digs.

For Hanson, Kynedi Cheeseman had 12 kills and eight digs, Leah Marsh had 18 digs and Emily Brown contributed 12 assists.

Parkston (4-2) plays Andes Central Tuesday in Lake Andes, while Hanson (4-1) plays Howard Tuesday in Alexandria.

Platte-Geddes 3, Wessington Springs 2

PLATTE — Platte-Geddes defeated Wessington Springs in five sets Thursday.

Set scores were 23-25, 25-19, 25-18, 20-25, 15-1.

Josie DeGroot led Platte-Geddes with two aces, four blocks and 18 digs and Maddy Whalen had six aces and 11 digs.

For Wessington Springs, Devin Tebay had 15 digs and two blocks, while Morgan Tebay had 21 digs and 10 assists. Shyanne Kopfmann had 11 kills and 10 digs.

Platte-Geddes (1-1) plays in a tournament in Sioux Falls on Saturday, and Wessington Springs (1-1) hosts Mitchell Christian Tuesday.

Ethan 3, Sanborn Central/Woonsocket 0

ETHAN — Ethan beat Sanborn Central/Woonsocket 25-10, 25-16, 25-16 in a high school volleyball match Thursday in Ethan.

For Ethan, Anna Mueller had 13 kills, four solo blocks, and 11 digs, While Darbi Gustafson had five kills and 11 digs, and Donna Pollreisz had nine aces.

For Sanborn Central/Woonsocket, Morgan Selland had five digs and five kills and Rachel Selland added five kills.

Ethan (3-2) plays Mount Vernon/Plankinton Tuesday and Sanborn Central/Woonsocket (0-2) plays Mitchell Christian Thursday.

Howard 3, Freeman 1

FREEMAN — Freeman beat Howard 25-13, 25-17, 22-25, 28-26 Thursday night in Freeman.

Shelby Jensen had 12 kills to lead Freeman, while Nicole Hinckley had 10 blocks, and Riley Mehlhaf had 30 assists.

For Howard (0-2), Taylor Noid had seven kills and nine digs, Sam Hughes had 17 digs and Haley DeJong had six blocks and 13 digs.

Howard’s next action is Saturday against Sioux Valley in Volga. Freeman (1-1) plays Gayville/Volin Thursday in Gayville.

Freeman Academy 3, Menno 0

MENNO — Freeman Academy won against Menno 26-24, 25-15, 25-15 in Menno.

For Freeman Academy, Hannah Yoder led with six kills and five blocks, while Polly Carlson and Sarah Miller both had three aces.

For Menno, Devon Bloch had four kills and four aces and Laura Wollmann had 11 digs.

Freeman Academy (2-0) plays Dell Rapids St. Mary Tuesday in Freeman, while Menno hosts Bridgewater/Emery Tuesday.

Marion 3, Irene-Wakonda 0

MARION — Marion defeated Irene-Wakonda 25-17, 25-21, 25-23 in a high school volleyball match.

For Irene-Wakonda, Bailey Hinseth led the way with five kills, 14 assists and two aces.

Renae Kayser had seven kills, two blocks, 15 assists, three digs and eight kills in the win. Erica Schoenwald had nine kills, four blocks and 14 aces, while Kaitlyn Engbrecht had 13 assists, 14 digs and 14 aces to pace the team.

Marion (3-2) plays at Canistota on Tuesday and Irene-Wakonda (1-2) plays Beresford Tuesday.

Kimball/White Lake 3,

Sunshine Bible Academy 0

KIMBALL — Kimball/White Lake defeated Sunshine Bible Academy 25-17, 25-9, 25-23 in a high school volleyball match Thursday in Kimball.

Jazmyn Hinker lead the charge for Kimball/White Lake with six aces and nine kills. Emily Sinclair had five aces and nine kills, Ivy Hines had 7 kills and Mary Kroupa had 12 assists.

For Sunshine Bible Academy, Sarah Pedersen had seven kills and three blocks.

Kimball/White Lake (1-1) plays Tripp-Delmont/Armour Thursday in Armour, while Sunshine Bible Academy (0-2) plays Highmore-Harrold Tuesday.

Wagner 3, Chamberlain 0

CHAMBERLAIN — Gina Soukup had seven kills and one ace to lead the Wagner Red Raiders volleyball team to a 3-0 win over Chamberlain Thursday.

Set scores were 25-20, 25-16, 25-13.

Krista Dvorak had two aces and 10 assists for Wagner. Kim Koupal had eight kills, Alex Dvorak and Kathleen Juffer each had two blocks, while Kayla Deurmier had 14 assists.

Chamberlain was led by Abbey Handel and Ilaria Giuli. Handel had six kills, seven assists and two aces, while Giuli had five kills and two blocks. Kennedy Wagner had eight assists for Chamberlain and Brigitte Byrd had 14 digs.

Wagner won the JV game 2-0.

Chamberlain (1-2) hosts Burke/South Central Tuesday. Wagner (4-2) plays Gregory Thursday in Wagner.

Lyman 3, Gregory 2

LYMAN — Lyman (2-0) outlasted Gregory (1-1) Thursday night in a back-and-forth five-set match 22-25, 25-13, 25-16, 24-26, 15-9.

Anna Flitner filled the stat sheet for the Raiders with 19 digs, 12 kills, seven aces and five blocks. Jessica Welter finished with 19 kills for Lyman, while Sara Herman added 19 digs.

Leading the Raiders in assists was freshman Hanna Thiry with 21 and Carly Uthe added 12.

Gregory senior outside hitter Courtney Opbroek led the Gorillas with 11 kills, while Codi Horst had a team-high 17 digs. Desiree Stephen and Brett Steffen each added 15 digs.

Gregory took the junior varsity match in three sets.

Up next for both teams is a seven-team tournament at Gregory on Saturday. Gregory opens with Jones County.

Bridgewater-Emery 3,

Tripp-Delmont/Armour 1

EMERY — The Bridgewater-Emery Huskies beat Tripp-Delmont/Armour in three sets Thursday.

Set scores were 25-17, 18-25, 25-11, 25-15.

Mallory Haiar led the Huskies with 10 kills and two blocks. Brenda Weber had six aces and 10 digs for Bridgewater-Emery, while Justine Dye and Tiana Kayser each had eight kills. Aly Hanssen chipped in with 17 assists and four aces.

TDA was led by Allyson Ledeboer, Hannah Just and Becca Brown. Ledeboer had two aces, Just had 25 digs and Brown had 16 digs.

Bridgewater-Emery (1-1) plays Menno Tuesday in Menno. TDA (1-1) hosts Avon Tuesday in Tripp.
