Three Kernels win events at First Dakota Relays

YANKTON — The Mitchell High School track and field team crowned two boys and one girl champions Thursday at the First Dakota Relays in Yankton.

Gramm Johnson won a track event, while Ben Prill and Tevyn Waddell each won field events.

Johnson won the boys 100-meter dash with a time of 11.0 seconds, edging Bon Homme’s Chase Kortan, who had a time of 11.1.

Prill finished atop the leaderboard in the boys triple jump competition. He recorded a leap of 41 feet, 11 inches, beating second-place finisher Brady Hale, of Yankton, with a jump of 40-5. Prill also finished fifth in the long jump.

Waddell won the girls pole vault event after clearing 9-6 and finished fourth in the high jump.

Two other area girls competitors also brought home titles Thursday. Bon Homme’s Anna Heusinkveld won the 100-meter dash with a time of 12.6, while Scotland’s Carley Skorepa won the discus and shot put events. Skorepa tossed the discus 129-0 and threw the shot a distance of 36-0.75 to win the event.

The Bon Homme boys also took home two titles. Scott Van Winkle won the 400-meter dash and the Cavaliers’ 1,600-meter relay team took home top honors. Van Winkle beat the field by nearly 2 seconds after recording a time of 53.2 seconds.
