Three Kernels place at Howard Wood
SIOUX FALLS — Mitchell High School track coach Geoff Gross was proud of his team’s effort Saturday at Howard Wood Dakota Relays and with good reason.
The Kernels recorded three top-eight finishes at the meet, including a seventh-place performance by Emma Schmidt and two third-places efforts from Ellie Rew and Abby Sudbeck.
“It was good to see the girls compete today,” Gross said. “Abby is starting to strike her groove. Ellie nailed a hurdle hard in the 100 hurdles, she did that last year and wiped out, but this year she kept pushing through and finished third. That really shows how strong she is and how much time she has put in in the weight room.”
Rew finished third in the girls 100-meter hurdles with a time of 15.23 seconds, while Sudbeck launched a throw of 127 feet, 5 inches for third place in the discus. She also took fourth in the girls shot put Friday at Howard Wood with a throw of 38 feet, 4 inches. Schmidt ran 1:03.35 to take seventh in the 400-meter dash. Rew was beat out by Irene-Wakonda’s Lauren Sokolowski and Harrisburg’s Haley Bruggeman, who finished first and second respectively. Rew also just missing placing in the 300 hurdles. She took ninth in the event with a time of 47.85.
As for Sudbeck she was beat out by Kiana Phelps, of Kingsley-Pierson High School (Iowa), and Stephanie Gemar, of Mobridge-Pollock.
“This sets the stage for state,” Sudbeck said. “This gives you a good indication of where everyone is at and it gives you a mark that you need to work for. I have had a really rough beginning season because I had a knee injury last summer.”
Mitchell is back in action at the Yankton Invitational Thursday in Yankton.
