Thomas Michael Selland

Thomas Michael Selland, 61 years, died peacefully on November 17th 2013 at Avera McKennan Hospital in Sioux Falls after a short battle with cancer. He was born on December 9th 1951 to Edmund and Olga (Wahl) Selland in Wessington Springs, SD. Tom grew up on a farm near Letcher, SD and attended country school and graduated from Mt. Vernon High School in 1970. He then attended Dakota State University for one year, then he returned to his first love farming. Tom married Sandra Nelson on June 16th 1973 and had been a life-long farmer/rancher near Forestburg, SD up until the time of his illness. Tom and Sandy raised three children- twin daughters Ivy and Holly, and son Merlin. Tom enjoyed his livestock, anything with sugar in it, a good visit, a good book, a good joke, visiting on the phone, and most of all his family. His grandkids were a source of happiness for him and he felt lucky they were all close by. Tom was a person who would give you the shirt off his back if you needed it and then help you put it on. He was a wonderful husband, father and grandfather and we are all heartbroken to lose him. Life will never be the same.

Tom is survived by his wife Sandy, daughters Ivy (Stacy) Senska, Holly (Jim) Cech, son Merlin (Vivian DeWitt), grandchildren Sawyer and Aubrey Senska, and Jesse and Ryan Cech, sisters Jane Eakin, and Jill (Bob) Siedschlaw, aunts Carol (Benny) Mulder, and Elaine Bock, nieces, nephews, and cousins. He was preceded in death by his parents, his in-laws, and several close friends.

Tom distinctive voice, boisterous laugh, and caring nature will be missed by all.
