A big six-run third inning carried the Mitchell Legion baseball team over Sioux Falls East 6-1 Tuesday night at Cadwell Park.

After stranding two base runners in the second inning, Mitchell responded in the third with a six-run rally started by Derek Miller, who hit a two-run double down the third baseline to drive in Jed Schmidt and Dylanger Pierson.

"We played very well today," said Miller, who went 2-for-3 with a walk. "We came out strong, we got on base, played our positions well, and it was a good team effort."

Michael Sadler, Ben Miller and Jacob Cersosimo all scored runs to finish off the scoring in the third.

Post 18 coach Luke Norden said the team took a lot of quality at-bats early in the game, which helped lead to a breakout third inning.

"It was good for us to get on the board early," Norden said. "After they changed pitchers, we needed to do a better job of adjusting to the next guy on the mound."

Earning the win on the mound for Post 18 was Sadler, who pitched seven innings. He allowed one run with one strikeout.

"He threw really well. His curveball was really good tonight," Norden said. "It helped keep them off balanced and everything else more effective."

Mitchell (21-11) threatened to add to the lead in the fifth inning when it loaded the bases. But the inning ended after Miller hit a hard ball up the middle that bounced off the pitcher, who was able to recover and record the out.

"I don't think you can hit a ball any harder," Norden said, adding Miller should have had a couple more RBIs. "He put a couple good swings on the ball tonight."

Sioux Falls East was able to put up one run in the top of the seventh after earning back-to-back walks off Sadler.

Schmidt finished the game 3-for-4 and Sadler went 2-for-4.

Miller said the win should help Mitchell moving forward.

"It's a big win for us," Miller said. "Were 4-3 in our region and if we come away with a win against Brandon, we can finish as the second seed and have home field for regions."

Post 18 plays today at Brandon at 6 p.m.
