Sanborn County Sheriff Tom Fridley said Gary Edwards, 55, of Humble, Texas, was treated at Avera Queen of Peace Hospital in Mitchell and later released.

Wildlife Conservation Officer Andy Petersen said Edwards was hunting with a party of seven friends around 4 p.m. when a pheasant took flight and a hunter in the party swung and fired on the bird. Edwards was about 100 yards away at the time, but two pellets penetrated his shoulder and one the skin near his eyebrow. His friends drove Edwards to Mitchell for treatment.

Petersen said the shooting incident is the Mitchell area’s first hunting mishap this year. He urged hunters to be careful.

“Always be sure you know what’s between you and your target before you fire and what’s beyond,” Petersen said.
