Tabor knocks out M/M, stays alive at state tourney
WEBSTER -- The Tabor Legion baseball team will see a new day in the State B Legion Baseball Tournament as it ousted McCook/Miner 12-10 Sunday.
Tabor will play Groton today for a spot in the title game. With a loss, Tabor is eliminated. McCook/Miner finishes its season at 16-7.
Tabor outhit McCook/Miner 15-9 in the game and Tabor coach Ken Ranek said it came at the right time.
"The bats were working for us," said Ranek, whose team improved to 13-8 on the season. "Blase (Vanecek) and Kodi (Larson) came to bat and everybody on our team was making contact."
Vanecek went 5-for-5 with four RBIs, two doubles and a triple, while Larson went 3-for-5 with four RBIs, a double and a home run. Mike Kocer had three hits, including a double, Sawyer Fridrich had two hits.
"Our achilles happened to be our pitching, which usually is our strength," Ranek said. "We couldn't hit the strike zone and we were giving them some free bases."
The winning pitcher was Larson, who had seven strikeouts in six innings. The losing pitcher was Zach Schrank.
For McCook/Miner, Zach Bies had two hits with a double and three RBIs and Schrank had two hits with an RBI.
GROTON 5, MCCOOK/MINER 3
WEBSTER -- Groton defeated McCook/Miner 5-3 in the second round of the State B Legion Tournament Saturday.
M/M got out to an early 2-0 lead but Groton came back to score three runs in the fourth. Groton outscored M/M 2-1 through the final five innings to secure the victory.
Tyler Genzlinger was the losing pitcher, giving up five runs -- one of which was earned -- on 12 hits. He had three strikeouts in eight innings.
Matt Thorson was the winning pitcher for Groton, striking out eight in seven innings.
Jon Forster went 2-for-4 with a double and a run scored in the loss. Zach Bies and Greg Mehlbrech each had a single, while Genzlinger recorded the game's only triple.
Groton outhit M/M 12-5.
TABOR 7, WINNER/COLOME 3
WEBSTER -- In an elimination game, Tabor defeated Winner/Colome 7-3 Saturday.
Winner/Colome ended its season 11-2.
Austin Kaul was the winning pitcher, giving up three earned runs on eight hits while striking out 10 in 8 1/3 innings. Blase Vanecek recorded the final two outs, striking out one.
Reed Harter was the losing pitcher for Winner/Colome, giving up five earned runs on 12 hits in nine innings.
Offensively for Tabor, Scott Wieseler was 4-for-5 with a double and three RBIs, while Kodi Larson was 2-for-4 with a run scored, double and pair of RBIs. Vanecek also went 2-for-4 with a double and Kaul had an RBI.
For Winner/Colome, Tanner Fritz went 3-for-4 with an RBI, a run scored and a stolen base. Sam Naasz went 1-for-4 with an RBI and Patrick Aeschbacher went 2-for-4 with a run scored. Landon Engel had an RBI double in the loss.
