The Mitchell Department of Public Safety received a report Friday of a man who approached two small children playing in the front yard of their home in the 200 block of East Ninth Avenue and offered the children candy on more than one occasion.

The children's parents confronted the man and told him to leave the area. Authorities said the man told the children that he wanted to take them home with him.

Sgt. Ryan Erickson said Sunday that the man had been interviewed by the police division, but no charges have been filed at this point. The subject was identified by police officers who had recognized the man from previous encounters.

Witnesses described the man as an older American Indian man of medium build who was about 5-foot-6-inches and had black and grey shaggy hair. He was wearing a baseball-style cap and had a heavy black coat. That description was released to various media outlets Saturday by the Mitchell Department of Public Safety.
