SIOUX FALLS — Brayden Carlson scored 13 points as No. 3 seed South Dakota State beat sixth-seeded Western Illinois 71-50 on Sunday in the Summit League quarterfinals.

Jordan Dykstra added 12 points and 10 rebounds for South Dakota State (19-11). Chad White and Marcus Heemstra had 10 apiece.

South Dakota State held a 26-23 lead at halftime. Zach Horstman’s dunk gave the Jackrabbits their first double-digit lead of the game, which they held for the remainder. A 10-0 run, all scored by Carlson and Dykstra, made in 51-31.

Western Illinois (10-20) was led by Garret Covington with 14 points. Jabari Sandifer had 13 and Michael Ochereobia 10.

The Jackrabbits outrebounded Western Illinois 38-26 and went to the free throw line 31 times, making 23 of them, compared to 16 attempts.

South Dakota State advances to play No. 2 seed Indiana-Purdue Fort Wayne in the semifinals on Monday.

Denver 71, South Dakota 55

SIOUX FALLS — Brett Olson made four 3-pointers on his way to 20 points as fourth-seeded Denver beat No. 5 South Dakota 71-55 on Sunday in the Summit League quarterfinals.

Denver led 38-32 at halftime, then held South Dakota to 23 second-half points on 35 percent shooting. Olson’s 3-pointer to start the second half gave Denver a nine-point lead.

Bryant Rucker had 14 points for Denver (16-14) and Jalen Love added 12. The Pioneers forced 11 turnovers, leading to 20 points.

South Dakota (12-18) was led by Brandon Bos with 13 and Trevor Gruis’ 12. The Coyotes made five 3-pointers in the first half but made just 1 of 7 in the second.

The Coyotes trailed 60-50 with 3:46 left, then only made one more field goal, a Tavian Pomlee 3-pointer with 40 second left, the rest of the game.

Denver faces top-seeded North Dakota State in the semifinals on Monday.

Saturday’s game

IPFW 85, IUPUI 47

SIOUX FALLS — Luis Jacobo scored 19 points and Steve Forbes added 11 with nine rebounds as No. 2 seed Indiana-Purdue Fort Wayne rolled past seventh-seeded Indiana-Purdue Indianapolis 85-47 in the opening round of the Summit League tournament Saturday night.

IPFW (23-9) shot 57.4 percent from the field and outrebounded the Jaguars 39-23. Mo Evans finished with 13 points, Joe Edwards chipped in 10 and Jacobo had seven boards.

IUPUI (6-27) was limited to 21-of-51 shooting (41.2 percent) and went 3 of 14 from deep. Mitch Patton scored 18 points and Ian Chiles contributed 12.

Leading 18-16, the Mastodons pulled away with a 22-6 run to close the first half. Evans and Michael Kibiloski each sank 3-pointers during the run, helping IPFW grab a 40-22 halftime advantage. IPFW coasted in the second half, pushing their lead to 30 on a Forbes three-point play with 9:27 remaining.

IPFW advanced to the semifinals on Monday.

Women’s basketball

South Dakota 96, Western Illinois 94

SIOUX FALLS — Junior Raeshel Contreras made a 3-pointer with 3 seconds left on the clock to lift No. 4 seed University of South Dakota women’s basketball team to a 96-94 victory over No. 5 seed Western Illinois University Sunday.

The Coyotes (17-13) climbed out of a 17-point deficit in the first half to advance to the semifinals, which is against top-seeded South Dakota State University at noon today. Nicole Seekamp had 26 points, nine assists and seven rebounds, while Contreras added 22 points, Kelly Stewart had 13, Polly Harrington had 13 and Margaret McCloud scored 10.

WIU’s Ashley Luke led all players with 35 points and had 12 rebounds for a double-double. Marley Hall and Michelle Maher each scored 14 points and Tori Niemann contributed 12.

WIU ends the season 14-16.

Denver 79, Fort Wayne 73

SIOUX FALLS — No. 6 seed University of Denver upset No. 3 Indiana University-Purdue University Fort Wayne 79-73 Sunday afternoon.

Denver (8-22) advances to face IUPUI in the semifinals at 2:30 p.m. today at the Sioux Falls Arena.

Denver was led by Paige Bradley with 24 points, Kailey Edwards with 14 and Alison Janecek with 12 rebounds. Bradley was 5-of-6 from behind the arc.

IPFW’s Amanda Hyde scored a game-high 28 points in the loss. The Mastodons end their season 15-14.

Saturday’s game

IUPUI 72, North Dakota State 64

SIOUX FALLS — No. 2 seed Indiana University-Purdue University Indianapolis women’s basketball team defeated No. 7 seed North Dakota State University 72-64 Saturday in the opening round of the Summit League Championships at the Sioux Falls Arena.

DeAirra Goss scored a game-high 25 points to lead IUPUI, which was 27-of-60 from the field and 17-of-23 from the line. Nevena Markovic and Dee-Dee Bellamy each added 11 points and Shanika Maddox added 10 points in the win. Markovic grabbed 10 rebounds for a double-double.

NDSU’s Brooke LeMar and Kahla Becken each scored 16 points, while Marena Whittle recorded a double-double with 14 points and 10 rebounds. The Bison were 25-of-59 from the field and 6-of-7 from the line.

IUPUI (22-8) plays No. 6 Denver at 2:30 p.m. today for a spot in Tuesday’s championship game. NSDSU ends its season 6-24.
