“We ran with an abbreviated team, leaving some kids at home,” Mitchell track and field coach and activities director Geoff Gross said. “But we had some nice performances.”

On the girls side, Abby Sudbeck took first in the discus with a throw of 121 feet, 2 inches.

She also won the shot put with a toss of 37-4.5, a foot better than the second place finisher, Watertown’s Brooke LeBlanc.

Ellie Rew also won for the Kernel girls with a time of 15.66 seconds in the 100-meter hurdles. Rew finished more than a second faster than Watertown’s Kalli Thue, who took second place in the event.

“Ellie really didn’t get pushed by anybody in the field, but ran a clean race,” Gross said. “She improved on some things that she had worked on during the week.”

For the boys, Reed Overweg took first in the long jump and triple jump for Mitchell. Overweg won the long jump with a leap of 18-10.25, while taking the triple jump with a distance of 40-07.75.

Overweg also placed sixth in the 200-meter dash for the Kernels with a time of 24.85 seconds.

Gross pointed out the improvement that Kyle Weier has made this season. The sophomore placed sixth in the discus for the Kernels with a throw of 123-9.

The Kernels are in action next at the Eastern South Dakota Conference meet Saturday in Brandon.
