Stibral remains one of three undefeated wrestlers in Class B
ABERDEEN — Bon Homme/Scotland’s Dan Stibral is one of just three Class B wrestlers still undefeated through the first day of the state tournament, and he is the easiest to spot.
The BH/S powerhouse picked up pins over Kyle Blume, of Redfield/Doland, and Stanley County’s Cade Larson in the first two rounds of the Class B state tournament Friday at the Barnett Center in Aberdeen.
The wins moved Stibral’s season record to 38-0 and put him in the semifinals of the 285-pound weight class, where he will face Sawyer Rous, of Bennett County, Saturday.
“I wouldn’t have believed it at the beginning of the year,” Stibral said of his perfect record thus far.
Stibral is looking to improve on his third-place finish at 285 pounds in last year’s Class B tournament, when he wrestled for Scotland. This is the first year for the Bon Homme/Scotland wrestling co-op, and Stibral believes the merger has helped his physical and mental performance.
“It has been a smooth transition for the guys from Scotland,” Stibral said. “I have a lot more practice partners and the coaches have helped the guys become mentally ready, which has helped me keep going late in the third period and overtimes.”
The junior has met Rous one time before, beating him in double overtime at the state tournament two years ago.
“That is going to be a tough match,” BH/S coach Mark Stoebner said. “The Bennett County kid is all of the 285 pounds, while Dan is about 240.”
Stoebner added Stibral will need to avoid Rous’ weight and use his speed advantage to stay out of tough situations to be successful and reach the championship round.
The other two undefeated wrestlers in Class B are Beresford’s 106-pounder Dakota Galt (31-0) and Flandreau’s 160-pounder Jace Christiansen (50-0), both of whom won their first two matches of the tournament Friday.
The second day of the Class B state tournament starts at 10 a.m. today with the semifinal round at the Barnett Center in Aberdeen.
