State teener roundup: Canova/Salem, Tyndall advance to semis
NORTHVILLE -- The Canova/Salem teener baseball team edged Kimball/White Lake on Friday to keep its hopes for a state title alive.
Canova/Salem won the game 8-7 and had nine hits and four errors. Canova/Salem will play at 7:30 p.m. today in the semifinals. Kimball/White Lake will play for a spot in the consolation championship at 2:30 p.m. today.
Jordan Genzlinger was the winning pitcher, giving up two runs on three hits while striking out four and walking two in four innings. Jesse Muth started the game for Canova/Salem, giving up five runs, two earned, on five hits while striking out two in three innings.
Kimball/White Lake's Dylan Mohnen was the losing pitcher. He gave up eight runs, six earned, on seven hits, struck out one and walked two in four innings. Abiah Plastow threw the final three innings, giving up no runs on two hits and striking out two.
Tanner Miller went 2-for-4 with two RBIs and two runs scored in the win, Muth went 1-for-4 with two RBIs and Collin Cleveland went 2-for-3 with two runs scored.
Todd Kiefer went 2-for-4 with two runs scored, Carter Fredericksen went 1-for-2 with two RBIs and Javen Holan went 1-for-2 with two RBIs and one run scored in the loss.
Warner 3, Alexandria 2
NORTHVILLE -- The Alexandria teener baseball team was edged by Warner 3-2 Thursday in the opening game of the 15-16 VFW state B tournament in Northville.
Alexandria recorded two runs on six hits and two errors in the contest, while Warner had three runs on three hits and three errors.
The losing pitcher was Wyatt Kayser after throwing a complete game, striking out nine and walking two. Kade Hallenbeck was the winning pitcher, going the distance and striking out four.
Alexandria's Thomas Arend went 2-for-3 and Trent Kingsbury went 2-for-3 with an RBI. Warner's leading hitter was John Henson going 1-for-2 with two RBIs.
Alexandria plays Gregory at noon today, while Warner plays Gary-Canby at 5 p.m. today.
Gary-Canby 2, Gregory 1
NORTHVILLE -- Gary-Canby scored a run in the bottom of the seventh inning to defeat Gregory 2-1 on Friday in the first round of the 15-16 VFW state B tournament in Northville.
Kristian Leppke drew a bases-loaded walk to push the winning run across for Gary-Canby. The winning pitcher was Braeden Full, giving up two hits and walking one in three innings.
The losing pitcher was Jayd VanDerWerff, who gave up two runs on two hits while striking out seven in seven innings.
Gregory plays Alexandria at noon today, while Gary-Canby advances to play Warner at 5 p.m. today.
Tyndall 9, Chancellor 0
VOLGA -- Tyndall advanced to the semifinal of the 15-16 VFW state A baseball tournament Friday.
Tyndall (10-5) defeated Chancellor 9-0 and plays at 7:30 p.m. today for a spot in Sunday's championship game.
Cole Uecker was the winning pitcher and threw the first three innings. Carter Mecham and Zach Sutera threw in relief.
Hunter Young and Mecham each had a double and single in the win.
