Standoff ends peacefully in Douglas County
CORSICA -- A 38-year-old man surrendered peacefully after barricading himself inside a home with a loaded shotgun for more than an hour Monday night in Corsica.
According to Douglas County Sheriff Jon Coler, the standoff began at approximately 7 p.m. after authorities received a report of a suicidal man from a bystander. They received another call from the man himself a short time later.
Four officers with the Douglas County Sheriff's Office and South Dakota Highway Patrol responded to the incident, which, according to Coler, happened at a home near the intersection of Fourth Street and Corse Avenue.
"We set up a perimeter and waited it out a little bit," Coler said.
The man, whose name Coler did not release, was alone in the home and was periodically in contact with a dispatcher based in Charles Mix County, Coler said. After about an hour and a half, the man agreed to give himself up.
No one was injured in the incident, but authorities did find a loaded shotgun inside the home. The 38-year-old has not been charged with any crime.
