DWU softball team splits twin bill
SIOUX CITY, Iowa -- The Dakota Wesleyan University softball team split a Great Plains Athletic Conference doubleheader with Briar Cliff Wednesday in Sioux City, Iowa.
The Tigers' bats came alive in game one as the team outhit Briar Cliff 15-4 and won the game 3-1. Brandi Nekrassoff picked up the win after throwing all seven innings and giving up just four hits and one run. She struck out five batters.
Both teams recorded eight hits in the second game, but DWU was unable to sweep the series and lost 3-2. Nekrassoff pitched the entire game again, giving up three runs on eight hits while striking out one.
The Tigers (6-19, 3-3 GPAC) travel to Sioux Falls on Saturday to take on former GPAC rival, University of Sioux Falls, in a nonconference doubleheader.
Vikings play Bills, Chargers at home in preseason
EDEN PRAIRIE, Minn. (AP) -- The Minnesota Vikings will host Buffalo and San Diego in exhibition games this year.
The NFL released the preseason schedule on Wednesday, with specific dates and times yet to be finalized. The Bills will visit Minnesota for a game the weekend of Aug. 16-19 and the Chargers will come for a game the weekend of Aug. 23-26. The Vikings have road exhibition contests scheduled at San Francisco the weekend of Aug. 9-12 and at Houston on either Aug. 29 or 30.
The NFL regular season schedule will be released later this month. The Vikings will have road games at St. Louis, Seattle, Washington, Houston and Indianapolis and home games against Arizona, San Francisco, Tampa Bay, Jacksonville and Tennessee, plus the usual home-and-home series against their NFC North opponents.
Two local bowlers get perfect games
Tyler Oberbroekling and Steve Shattuck both bowled 300 games this week.
Oberbroekling recorded the fourth perfect game at Platte Lanes since the bowling center has kept records. He also set records at Platte Lanes for his 774 series.
Shattuck finished with his third 300 during his first game of league Wednesday night at Village Bowl, in Mitchell.
