South Dakota defeats Colgate 31-21 for first win
VERMILLION -- South Dakota scored four touchdowns on the ground, including a pair by quarterback Josh Vander Maten, and defeated Colgate 31-21 on Saturday for its first win of the season.
Vander Maten gained 73 yards on 14 carries and completed 12 of 15 passes for 102 yards.
South Dakota's Jasper Sanders broke a 14-14 deadlock with a 7-yard scoring run with 10:45 left in the third quarter. Kevin Robb booted a 34-yard field goal late in the third.
After Colgate (0-2) pulled within 24-21 on a 13-yard run by Gavin McCarney with 45 seconds left in the third, South Dakota (1-1) pulled away again in the fourth on a 5-yard run by Marcus Sims with 9:31 left.
South Dakota State 31, SE Louisiana 14
HAMMOND, La. -- Zach Zenner rushed for 278 yards and South Dakota State defeated Southeastern Louisiana 31-14 Saturday night, handing the Lions their first loss in a home opener since resuming football in 2003.
Zenner, with 34 carries and one touchdown, had the most yardage by a running back in South Dakota State's Division I era, which began in 2004-05.
South Dakota State (1-1) led 13-0 at halftime, then the Lions (0-2) made it 13-7 on a 19-yard touchdown pass from Nathan Stanley to Michael Chaney with 10:12 left in the third quarter.
The Jackrabbits quickly pulled away. Austin Sumner hit Jason Schneider with a 46-yard scoring pass, then Zenner's 35-yard TD with 3:05 to go in the third quarter made it 28-7.
South Dakota State had 439 yards total offense. Southeastern Louisiana had 179 yards, including minus-11 yards rushing.
Stanley completed 22 of 43 passes for 190 yards for the Lions.
University of Sioux Falls 45, Minnesota State University-Moorhead 10
SIOUX FALLS -- The University of Sioux Falls racked up 472 yards of offense in its home-opening win Saturday over Minnesota State University-Moorhead.
The Cougars got 258 rushing yards in their first Northern Sun Intercollegiate Conference win.
USF senior tailback Kristian Porter recorded 117 rushing yards and a touchdown on 14 carries.
Carrington Hanna and Jeremiah Oates combined for 168 receiving yards for the Cougars, and quarterback Taylor Perkins posted 170 yards and three touchdowns.
USF (2-0) travels to Minot, N.D. for a 2:30 p.m. NSIC matchup against Minot State on Saturday.
University of Mary 31, Augustana 25
BISMARCK, N.D. -- Augustana's Dajon Newell rushed for 111 yards on 20 carries, but the University of Mary won 31-25 in a Northern Sun Intercollegiate Conference matchup Saturday.
Mary, which led 21-14 at halftime, passed for 407 yards. Mary QB Craig Bagnell completed 30 of 49 passes with one interception and had four touchdowns.
Augustana quarterback Josh Hanson was 27-of-52 passing for 343 yards with two touchdowns and two interceptions. Grant Gebhardt caught eight passes for 148 yards for Augustana, which is 1-1 and hosts Minnesota Crookston at 1 p.m. Saturday in Sioux Falls.

Northern State 30
ABERDEEN -- Southwest Minnesota State's Lance Schuveiller kicked a 26-yard field goal as time expired to lift the Mustangs past Northern State 32-30 Saturday in a Northern Sun Intercollegiate Conference game.
Northern trailed 21-9 early in the second quarter and rallied to take leads in the third and fourth quarters.
The Wolves were led by halfback John Hughes, who had 99 yards and a touchdown on 23 carries.
Quarterback Jared Jacobson passed for 92 yards and a touchdown on 6-of-14 passing.
NSU (0-2) faces NSIC opponent Winona State at 4:30 p.m. Saturday in its next action.
Colorado School of Mines 71,
South Dakota School of Mines 7
RAPID CITY -- Colorado School of Mines, an NCAA Division II school, racked up 589 yards of offense in a 71-7 rout of South Dakota School of Mines, an NAIA Division II school, Saturday.
Mines and Technology recorded 133 yards of offense and got its lone touchdown in the first quarter, when sophomore quarterback Mike Zanutoo fired a 76-yard pass to DeShaun Scott.
Sanborn Central High School graduate Lukas Van Laecken recorded a sack in the loss.
The Hardrockers (0-2) play Jamestown College at 1 p.m. Saturday in its next action.
Idaho State 38, Black Hills State 5
POCATELLO, Idaho -- The Idaho State football team recorded 626 yards of offense in a 38-5 rout of Black Hills State Saturday.
The game was BHSU's first game of the year. The Yellow Jackets took a 2-0 lead on a safety in the first quarter, caused by a penalty by Idaho State's offense.
ISU answered with three straight touchdowns and never gave up the lead.
BHSU quarterback Ward Anderson was 16-of-42 passing for 90 yards.
The Yellow Jackets (0-1) play at the Colorado School of Mines at noon Saturday.
Waldorf College 47,
Presentation College 29
FOREST CITY, Iowa -- Presentation College was outscored 29-7 in the second half, which gave its football team its first loss of the season against Waldorf College 47-29 Saturday.
The Saints led 22-18 at the half but gave up their lead by only scoring once in the second half of the game.
Saints' quarterback Stephen Braswell completed 23 of 52 passes for 277 yards and three touchdowns in the game, while Will Vealy had 13 carries for 60 yards and one touchdown.
PC (1-1) returns home to host Northwestern at 1 p.m. Saturday in Aberdeen.
