SIOUX FALLS (AP) — Sioux Falls police say an officer responding to a report of domestic assault was attacked by a dog and dispatched the animal with his sidearm.

KSFY-TV reports that the officer went to a home Wednesday afternoon to look for a suspect in a domestic assault.

Police say while at the door talking to the residents, a dog charged the officer from inside the residence. The officer retreated out of the yard and attempted to close a gate to prevent the dog from advancing.

Police say the gate did not stop the attacking animal and the officer shot the dog.

The dog's owner transported animal to a veterinary where the dog of its wounds.

Police say the officer received minor injuries in the attack.
