SIOUX FALLS (AP) — Some residents in one of Sioux Falls' oldest neighborhoods want to make their place in history official.

The area called either Hunter's Addition or Pendar Lane is a shady area of narrow streets lined with brick and wood frame houses. Some residents would like to see it listed on the National Register of Historic Places, the federal government's list of properties deemed worthy of recognition and preservation.

Project manager Debra Gaikowski in the city planning office tells the Argus Leader that the process could take up to five years. It if happens, it would be the eighth historic district in South Dakota's largest city.

Gaikowski says historic status for a neighborhood can add value to homes, but some residents worry it could inhibit their ability to upgrade their properties.
