Sioux Falls daycare owner charged in baby death
SIOUX FALLS (AP) — A woman faces a misdemeanor charge in connection with the death of a 3-month-old baby at her daycare in Sioux Falls.
KELO-TV reports that 41-year-old Cindy Jo Hanisch of Tea is charged with contributing to the abuse or neglect of a child. The charge is punishable by up to one year in prison.
Capt. Paul Niedringhaus of the Minnehaha County Sheriff's office says the May incident could be classified as an accident but Hanisch was ultimately responsible for the care of the child at her daycare.
Niedringhaus says Hanisch put the boy in a "sleeping position" and was unresponsive when she checked on him. The child was pronounced dead at the hospital.
Court documents say the cause death was asphyxia due to being in a face down sleep position.
