SF Lincoln fades late against West Oaks
The Sioux Falls Lincoln boys’ basketball team led for the majority of the second half before failing to close out the win against West Oaks Academy (Orlando, Fla.).
The Patriots fell 72-67 to the Flame in the Fourth Annual Mike Miller Classic Friday at the Corn Palace in Mitchell.
“I don’t believe in moral victories, but I told my team if there is such a thing, that was one of them,” Lincoln coach Jeff Halseth said after the loss. “We played one of the best teams in the state of Florida and competed with them right until the very end.”
With the game on the line late, West Oaks turned to senior Sidy Ndir, who scored 18 of his game-high 29 points in the second half.
Down 65-64, West Oaks scored four straight to take a three-point lead with 51 seconds remaining. The Flame hit their free throws to finish off the win.
“Any time you play on the road it’s going to be tough,” West Oaks coach Shaun Wiseman said. “We have been battling all year and this team continues to find a way to win ball games.”
West Oaks, which is 13-0, also got 20 points from Haroldas Saprykinas and 10 from Richardson Maitre.
The Patriots were led by Kaleb Johnson, who scored 19 points on 6-of-13 shooting from the field and grabbed a team-high five rebounds. Malik Dunn added 17 points for Lincoln, but missed a pair of open layups in the late moments of the second half to open the door for West Oaks.
The Patriots shot 50 percent from the field as a team and made 8-of-17 attempts from three-point range. The Flame were 57 percent from the field and made 6-of-11 3-pointers. The teams were even on boards, with both squads grabbing 23 rebounds in the game.
West Oaks Academy plays La Lumiere (La Porte, Ind.) at 3:30 p.m. today in second day action of the Mike Miller Classic. Sioux Falls Lincoln plays Tartan (Minn.) Jan. 4 at the Sanford Pentagon in Sioux Falls.
