SERMONETTE: Let Bible be your life hack in 2014
By Rev. Paul Manson

Maybe you’ve heard the popular phrase “life hack.” It dominates dozens of Internet sites like Facebook and Buzzfeed.com. According to Google, a life hack is “a strategy or technique adopted in order to manage one’s time and daily activities in a more efficient way.” (If you are of an older generation, think Hints from Heloise or The Home Handy Man.)
It’s little tricks like how to open a stuck jar lid with duct tape or how to get Cheetos crumbs out of your keyboard with a sticky note. There are countless life hacks out there in the areas of food, household, clothing, time management, etc. These little hints point to our need to bring simplicity into often out-of-control lives. We just want life to work better.
Life hacks are great, but can only bring improvement into small areas of life. But what about when your life is so out of control that no number of little hacks will solve the deep need?
We all try to manage our lives, but often our attempts fall short of a better life. Why not try letting God’s word manage your life for 2014? Psalm 32:8 reads, “I will instruct you and teach you in the way you should go; I will counsel you with my eye upon you.”
I believe that since we are created by God and he has revealed his heart and mind through the Bible, then why not receive counsel from him? So, for one year why not try reading his word daily? Start in the book known as the “Gospel of John” and go from there. There are also many daily Bible reading schedules available on the Web, pick one and see just what kind of change God can make in your life.
