SERMONETTE: Hope for spiritual awakening

Many years ago, Fredrick Nolan was fleeing from his captors during the North African persecution. As they were closing in on him, he sought refuge in a wayside cave where he fully expected to be found. Awaiting his death, he saw a spider weaving a web. Within minutes, the little creature had woven a beautiful web across the mouth of the cave. The pursuers arrived, but seeing the spider's web over the cave opening, assumed he couldn't be in there. Nolan emerged from his hiding place and proclaimed, "Where God is, a spider's web is like a wall. Where God is not, a wall is like a spider's web."

Psalms 33:12: "Blessed is the nation whose God is the Lord, the people whom he has chosen as his heritage!" (ESV)

At a men's Bible study meeting this past week, the discussion drifted into the spiritual condition of our nation. We by consensus agreed that our country is in trouble spiritually. We are witnessing the unraveling of the moral and spiritual underpinnings of our country. Someone in the group commented, "I have never been more pessimistic about our nation's future than right now; yet, I have never been more hopeful about the future that is in God's hand." The solutions humanity is putting forward seem so hopelessly inadequate. At the same time, God does what man cannot even begin to accomplish.

Ronnie Floyd, senior pastor of Northwest Arkansas' Cross Church said this: "Revival will not come from the next election -- as important as it is to exercise our right to vote. It will not come when the economy bounces back. It will not come because the car industry or the housing industry comes back strong. It will not come from playing church or maintaining the status quo. It will not come when we do not live like Jesus is Lord of every area of our lives. All of this is a guaranteed formula for failure.

Revival, and the spiritual future of our nation, will be determined by the people of God who will get down on their knees, pray, fast and believe that God is bigger than their circumstances, bigger than any election, bigger than the Democrats, bigger than the Republicans, and much bigger than we are. While we are in a dark midnight crisis spiritually in our nation, through prayer and fasting, spiritual breakthroughs await us.
