SERMONETTE: Happy Birthday, Land of the Free

By Rev. Carroll Torberson

Grace Baptist Church

We have recently, once again, celebrated our Independence Day, the 238th anniversary of the birth of a new nation, the Land of the Free, the United States of America. Patrick Henry, the “Orator of the Revolution,” stated, “It cannot be emphasized too strongly or too often that this great nation was founded, not by religionists, but by Christians; not on religion, but on the Gospel of Jesus Christ. For this very reason peoples of other faiths have been afforded asylum, prosperity and freedom of worship here.”

Our Founding Fathers saw the need to break away from a tyrannical system based on the principle of “Rex, Lex” (the king is the law), and established a constitutional republic based on the principle of “Lex, Rex” (The law is king). Their dependence on God and His Word was eloquently stated by Benjamin Franklin at the Constitutional Convention, “God governs the affairs of men. And if a sparrow cannot fall to the ground without His notice, is it probable that an empire can rise with out his aid? We have been assured in the Sacred Writings that except the Lord build the house, they labor in vain that build it.”

We are presently in the throes of a moral and societal breakdown in America. There has always been sin and immorality, but there has never before been a time in our nation’s history when the abominable actions against God and against Nature have been accepted as the norm. Those who do stand for righteousness are accused of being unkind and unloving. But changing trends and attitudes do not change God’s standards of right and wrong. We read in Isaiah 5:20, “Woe unto them that call evil good, and good evil.”

It is time that America gets back to its foundational principles of trusting God and obeying His word. “Happy is that people, whose God is the Lord.” (Psalm 144:15)
