"This is the day that the Lord has made; let us rejoice and be glad in it." Psalm 118:24
These words of the Psalmist speak a truth that is abundantly helpful for us, but so difficult for us to follow through with in our lives.
This summer has brought some pretty warm weather with a correspondingly high dew point. Complaints about the heat and humidity have been abundant. It would be nice to have 75 degree weather with a lower humidity, along with gentle rain showers each night. That would be nice, but that is a dream.
It was just six months ago that complaints were about the cold and snow. The roads and sidewalks were slippery, the daylight was short and the heating bills were high. Everyone seemed to yearn for the warmer weather of summer. The warmer days of summer are here, and the complaints continue to abound.
These words from the Psalmist should cause us to pause and refocus on the truth of the present. Today is a gift from God. Regardless of the weather conditions, today is a gift. As humans, we tend to focus on the future, hoping for a better tomorrow. The Psalmist helps us see we should be glad in the gift of today. Today, after all, is all that we have, for there are no guarantees about tomorrow.
The Psalmist calls us to "rejoice." The dictionary defines rejoice as "to feel joy or great delight." Do you have "great delight" in today? Perhaps the lesson to be learned is to be grateful for today, and give God thanks for today.
